Dear Hans,

What a week we have had in Washington! There is such a good energy when His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in town!

On Tuesday, His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived to attend the 2015 National Prayer Breakfast. I was delighted to join the Tibetan community in welcoming His Holiness and enjoyed seeing Tibetans perform the Tashi Sholpa dance and offer the traditional Chema Changpu.

On Wednesday, two ICT colleagues and I were fortunate enough to have an audience with His Holiness. During our meeting we reported on our progress and goals as an organization. We were delighted by his warm reception and by his words of encouragement to continue our work all over the world in support of the Tibetan people!

And, just this morning U.S. President Barack Obama warmly welcomed His Holiness to the National Prayer Breakfast! It was the first time that the Dalai Lama and a U.S. President have been present together at a public event since 2007 when His Holiness was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

President Obama said, “I want to offer a special welcome to a good friend, His Holiness the Dalai Lama who is a powerful example of what it means to practice compassion, and inspires us to speak up for the freedom and dignity of all human beings. I have been pleased to welcome him to the White House on many occasions and we are grateful to have him with us today.”

The President’s welcome and indeed, the invitation to this annual event, is a sign of the significance of the Tibet issue to both the American government and the American people as well as the Dalai Lama’s stature on the world stage.

I am so grateful to be representing you, our members and friends, on this occasion as president of the International Campaign for Tibet and look forward to accomplishing more in 2015 thanks to your support.

All my best,
Matteo Mecacci
