Yale finds a low-density planet that won’t stick to a schedule

Yale finds a low-density planet that won’t stick to a schedule

For their latest discovery, Yale astronomers and the Planet Hunter program have found a low-mass, low-density planet with a punctuality problem.
The new planet, called PH3c, is located 2,300 light years from Earth and has an atmosphere loaded with hydrogen and helium. It is described in the Oct. 29 online edition of The Astrophysical Journal.
The elusive orb nearly avoided detection. This is because PH3c has a highly inconsistent orbit time around its sun, due to the gravitational influence of other planets in its system. “On Earth, these effects are very small, only on the scale of one second or so,” said Joseph Schmitt, a Yale graduate student and first author of the paper. “PH3c’s orbital period changed by 10.5 hours in just 10 orbits.”
That inconsistency kept it from being picked up by automated computer algorithms that search stellar light curves and identify regular dips caused by objects passing in front of stars.
Luckily, Planet Hunters came to the rescue. The program, which has found more than 60 planet candidates since 2010, enlists citizen scientists to check survey data from the Kepler spacecraft. Planet Hunters recently unveiled a new website and an expanded scientific mission.
“It harnesses the human dimension of science,” said Debra Fischer, who leads the exoplanets group at Yale and is a co-author of the paper. “Computers can’t find the unexpected, but people can, when they eyeball the data.”
More than 300,000 volunteers are part of Planet Hunters, which is coordinated by Yale and the University of Oxford. The program’s revamped website will allow Planet Hunters to analyze data more quickly than before, Fischer said. In addition, Planet Hunters is launching an effort to see if there is a correlation between types of stars and the planets that form around them.
“I think we’ll be able to contribute some really unique science this way,” Fischer said.
Not only did Planet Hunters spot PH3c, but the discovery also enabled astronomers to better characterize two other planets — one on each side of PH3c. An outer planet, PH3d, is slightly larger and heavier than Saturn, for example. An inner planet, PH3b, may have a rocky composition, like Earth.
“Finding the middle planet was key to confirming the others and allowing us to find their masses,” Schmitt said. “The outer planet’s orbital period also changes slightly, by about 10 minutes. You need to see both planets’ changing orbital periods in order to find out the masses of the planets. One planet doesn’t give enough information.”
There’s also a quirky aspect of the planetary trio, Schmitt added. The outer planet’s year is 1.91 times longer than the middle planet’s year, and the middle planet’s year is 1.91 times longer than the inner planet’s year.
“We’re not sure if this is just a coincidence or whether this might tell us something about how the planets were formed,” Schmitt said.

Specular Spectacular

Specular Spectacular

This near-infrared, color view from NASA'S Cassini orbiter shows the sun glinting off of Titan's north polar seas.
This near-infrared, color mosaic from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows the sun glinting off of Titan's north polar seas. While Cassini has captured, separately, views of the polar seas (see PIA17470) and the sun glinting off of them (see PIA12481 andPIA18433) in the past, this is the first time both have been seen together in the same view.
The sunglint, also called a specular reflection, is the bright area near the 11 o'clock position at upper left. This mirror-like reflection, known as the specular point, is in the south of Titan's largest sea, Kraken Mare, just north of an island archipelago separating two separate parts of the sea.
This particular sunglint was so bright as to saturate the detector of Cassini's Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) instrument, which captures the view. It is also the sunglint seen with the highest observation elevation so far -- the sun was a full 40 degrees above the horizon as seen from Kraken Mare at this time -- much higher than the 22 degrees seen in PIA18433. Because it was so bright, this glint was visible through the haze at much lower wavelengths than before, down to 1.3 microns.
The southern portion of Kraken Mare (the area surrounding the specular feature toward upper left) displays a "bathtub ring" -- a bright margin of evaporate deposits -- which indicates that the sea was larger at some point in the past and has become smaller due to evaporation. The deposits are material left behind after the methane & ethane liquid evaporates, somewhat akin to the saline crust on a salt flat.
The highest resolution data from this flyby -- the area seen immediately to the right of the sunglint -- cover the labyrinth of channels that connect Kraken Mare to another large sea, Ligeia Mare. Ligeia Mare itself is partially covered in its northern reaches by a bright, arrow-shaped complex of clouds. The clouds are made of liquid methane droplets, and could be actively refilling the lakes with rainfall.
The view was acquired during Cassini's August 21, 2014, flyby of Titan, also referred to as "T104" by the Cassini team.
The view contains real color information, although it is not the natural color the human eye would see. Here, red in the image corresponds to 5.0 microns, green to 2.0 microns, and blue to 1.3 microns. These wavelengths correspond to atmospheric windows through which Titan's surface is visible. The unaided human eye would see nothing but haze, as in PIA12528.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The VIMS team is based at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Matching Gift Challenge Dear Hans,

I hope by now you have seen the news about our matching gift opportunity. Just a few days remain for us to raise $200,000 for our critical programs. A gift of $25 becomes $50…$50 becomes $100…and $150 becomes $300.

As I write, we still need to raise $33,256. Will you help us?

With $200,000 for our work, my colleagues and I can:
  • Advocate for Tibet at the highest levels of government, especially as President Obama prepares for his trip to China next month;

  • Share the truth about life inside Tibet as the Chinese Communist Party intensifies its wave of repression in Tibet by punishing those allegedly “associated” with self-immolators, including friends, families and even entire communities;

  • Work to build bridges between the Chinese people and Tibetans so that peace can prevail.
We can’t meet our goal without you standing with us, please give today.

Gratefully,
Melissa Jimison

ch ch changes

Life is sometimes a box of chocolate, no matter wich one you pick, they all are having something delicious :-)

It seems that life is such for me at the moment.

Almost 2 years ago, an old and precious friendship did drop apart. I know how it came, partially it was my own private matter, and partially it was the other side.
A few days ago I did give the person a 'like', at a site of a mutual friend. And from one came the other, we are back to be friends. We did agree that we both are assholes, and that's it!  I think that we need to talk a bit, sooner or later, about how it came and so more, but for now, it is a first step in getting together again, and I did shed a few tears because of that. It gives me hope, it means a lot to me that the other right away, without any doubts, did accept the FR and that we are talking and making fun again. It is so good! And, silly I, I all the sudden get hope for other items as well. What will be much more difficult, but I never shall give up hope, no matter how much they do -still- hurt me.

One friend more and one Facebookfriend less.  Willy De Bull is definitely exit. I did write a poem about him, the saloon hooligan, I will add that later, somewhere.  In fact that guy is a no good. He has a big mouth when it comes to football, he talks what others sais and when you ask simple questions (when he sais, we want no foreigners, I ask who are 'we'?  No answer) he ignores them or gets out of his mind. There was a big demo in Cologne, Hooligans against salafism, it was entitled and it ended in that the very agressive group did attack police and so more. Sadly that happens more and more, and because it were more people then expected, it lasted a bit before the things did calm down.
When Willie then writes.. we did keep stand, I wonder what the real reason was from being there.  And I did post that I have no tolerance for racism.  The result was a ban, and after the ban, he did write a (for his terms) essay about that I cannot judge because I was not there. Well, that's true, but I can ask and I can still be anti racismus, right.  I seem to be labeled in the hooligan world as an antifa..  Most likely it is also a group that they want to get rid of.  The opposite happens. He did get rid of me. Jay me. I dont have to read his stupid comments anymore.
One more idiot to go, who is a bit more sneaky, but he will get his stuff as well, dont worry!

Other positive points of the day..  My blood and blood pressure are okay. I could change my day of work, and next week we will get another step forward in the endles row of trying to get the paperwork solved. -sigh- :-)

As you could read (if any does)  there are a few tasteful chocolates in the box
But the most of the chocolate, and the box, I find simply and ease, next to me. Every day of my life.

The truth

I sometimes say, that lies are not that bad, because the truth will come out, sooner or later.

I do not mean with that to encourage lies, but I think that, in time, every lie will come out and that the one who is spreading them, gets it back. It  is a kind of karma.

Anyway, I did find out the truth about my 2nd FaceBook account. I was aware, for a while, that it was inactive, consequently of someone who had told FaceBook that the identity of the owner of that site (me also) was fake.

I did not bother for a long time, but well, sometimes I have those moments, and this week it was so far that I thought, no, I will NOT let it go and I shall get it back. After all it is MY account. After all it is MY effort and I think that anyone should respect that and leave it the way it is. Even my daughter-

So, after 2 contacts with the FaceBook Administration I could re open my FaceBook account. Dont worry, I am not going to play the games again, it was only to get it back and dont let her go away with it.
My suspects were proven as being right and I think by myself, I dont get it.  It did cost me a long time, but I more and more accept that they leave me alone, and that feels better, not to hope and fight, the more I do, the more I hurt myself.
Anyway, the other way around is not the same. Appearantly this person still is searching for mutual connections and breaking them down. I dont understand it, she asked me to leave her alone, and she is not leaving me alone at the other side?
Silly blockades, at both accounts, from both her accounts, even on that of S. Why? What is she expecting, that I spy her out?  I know she has a boyfriend, that was not so difficult to find out, and I have seen the picture, but only because of that I did discover what she did do to me, digital. I went looking and found my confirmation.

As usual, when there is something on my mind, I dump it in her former email box. I am not sure that she reads it, it doesnt matter to me, but the mailbox still is there, so there is chance that she ssees it, sooner or later. What means that she, then, will see what she did. A thing that she good is in hiding. Never is she to blame, always the others. Apart then when the truth comes out.  So, we are back where it was all about, the truth. I did find it out, and, just like her mom and grandma, these behavior will be corrected by the time. I do not do nothing for it, and I wish her not too much luck with the effort of blocking me out of her life. While, on the other hand, she is friends with my brother.  So, what does she want? I have no idea.  And I am not feeling like finding it out, so I dont ask my brother about it. I respect her plea, to leave her alone.  And yes, it is true, I never said her to leave me alone. But if she cant, then she should face the consequences.   There are a few less bricks in the wall. And, what is more important, there are no tears with me anymore. I think I finally learn it!

To my little girl
Long ago
There was that happy moment
where we were waiting for that much
Your first sound, the first touch
On that day, cold and with snow
Ahh... if i then should know...
You grow up happy
And so did we
Our worries were hidden away
You were spoiled and could happily play
Later you had even a brother to bother
ahh.. if I than did see
Getting further in time
There were some cuts in the line
I did choose for happiness, instead of the pain
I was long alone walking the lane
And God knows how often I did explain
Ahh.. you sweet part of mine
We went our own roads, that did not matter
Because at the cross points, we did gain together
You did choose your life, I did choose mine
At my path the happiness finally did come to the line
ahhh... I dont regret
You were not happy that I was happy too
You wanted me alone, and acted through
Many times you did tell little lies
You did transform to a devil in disguise
And when your friends did look trhough
you did dump them too
ahhh .. I know it so well
I am not angry about all of that
I even am not feeling sad
I took the distance, but how about you
What are all those things good for, what you now seem to do
Dont you have a little respect
If you want to forget me, just leave it and neglect
But my sweetheart, i always love you
So, if there is anything that I can do
You might say now never
Still, remind this, I am here for you, for ever

Matching Gift Challenge Dear Hans,

We’ve made a great start on the International Campaign for Tibet’s Matching Gift Challenge.

Thanks to friends like you, we’re on the way to our $100,000 goal. And with every contribution being matched dollar-for-dollar by a leading ICT supporter, we could soon have a grand total of $200,000 to put to work helping Tibetans live in peace.

Donate now to double the impact of your gift.

Your matched contribution will help ICT implement our strategic plans to step up our advocacy on behalf of the Tibetan people here in the U.S., throughout the European Union and at the United Nations … focus international pressure on the Chinese government to respect Tibetans’ human rights … and give hope to Tibetans in Tibet for a peaceful, secure future.

We will not rest until all of our Tibetan brothers and sisters can live according to their culture, values and traditions.

That’s easier said than done. But no group has more experience and commitment to the Tibetan movement than ICT. And if we get every available dollar out of the Matching Gift Challenge, it will give a big boost to all of our work.

This opportunity to make your support go twice as far helping Tibetans ends on November 3rd. Please respond right away so you don’t miss out.

On behalf of everyone here at ICT – and especially the Tibetans who will be touched by your support – I thank you for being as generous as possible with your gift.

Sincerely,
Matteo Mecacci

Never nooit meer!  The Toe Strikes back... Even wachten wat de pipo's daar zeggen, ik sta in mijn recht dus ik moet eigenijk wel weer mijn teen terug krijgen.

Als.. dan lees je het zeer zeker.

true friends / wahre Freunde

And again I made no friends. -smile-  I cannot stop myself, but I have to respond to things!!

Below 2 images of a german chat, in what the poster thanks for a beautiful evening, and in the same line tells that 'true friends'  were there until the early morning hours.

I had to write to it, that this person can not speak for others. Who can be so arrogant to think that he can decide who the host of the party considers as true friends?
It is not the first time that I did clinch with this person. He is ignoring me, what is perfectly and fine. He better not response, because I kill him with my words. I need a few less then he, to say what I think. Yes, weird huh, I love to write and I write often too much.

Nevermind. I shall, will and can not stop speaking my mind. And I feel free to speak my mind anywhere. And if one wants to get violent with me, (s)he can do that.

I am fed up with being the joker for others.
I am fed up with letting others heat me up, when others tell me that they support me and when I speak up then, I stand all alone.
I wont show what I know. Hell it is at internet now, so everyone CAN know :-) hahaha.

No, seriously. I refuse any longer to do all the dirty work for others.  Good huh?  Dont worry, I will forget this fast enough and then I will find myself again doing the same. Mistakes, I made a few. And I stick with them.  No matter if you are my child or a friend. You can take it or leave it. I am me, I am fucking proud at myself, others LOVE me and if you cant handle me you dont!  The more time I have for the ones I love

Oh, and you stranger, who thinks you can tell me things... No. Not with me. I wait. You are digging your hole and will fall fast and deep.  I dont want to see you falling down, but since you do it yourself, I dont feel too much pitty for you. Only for who are around you and do not see it clearly.

F CK you all, who doesn't know me.  And I LOVE my long term friends. Who can stuck with me for many years, acceept my failures and my strong things..  I love you and I will always do. What even counts for my brother, who doesnt know it

Note to myself

I should not

- let myself being provoked by one person, who clearly did search a conflict with me.
- Watch too much of the childish behavior that he and his family are trying to do
(or is it coincidence that the person himself all the sudden reacts on messages that I write to mutual friends?
or is it coincidence that, after a year of non posting, now all the sudden his brother is posting -stupid stuf- in 'our'  photo group?)
- Realize that it is NOT my group. I am only a visitor there. Weird enough with administrator rights, but that is just in name.

I should

Try to ignore that provokation
Post  positive, constructive, and topic alike.
(A photographers group is different then  a photography group)
Keep silent, until the moment that I decide myself that I leave the group
Wait with telling all at the moment that I am ready for the leave.

Building up my friendships and contacts.

Spermy Hermy will not get me down.  That's why I write it here, no one involved reads it, I think. nd if, hen it is fine as well, then the decisions get a bit more speeded up then expected. I dont mind too much :-)

Nobel Peace Prize 2014: Pakistani Malala Yousafzai, Indian Kailash Satyarthi Honored For Fighting For Child

The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Pakistani Malala Yousafzai and Indian Kailash Satyarthi for "their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education."
"Children must go to school and not be financially exploited," The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated in a press release. "In the poor countries of the world, 60% of the present population is under 25 years of age. It is a prerequisite for peaceful global development that the rights of children and young people be respected."
Yousafzai, 17, was shot in the head by Taliban militants in 2012 for having the temerity to seek an education. The Islamist militant group also took issue with her for publishing a blog in 2009 that promoted the right to education.
"I think of it often and imagine the scene clearly. Even if they come to kill me, I will tell them what they are doing is wrong, that education is our basic right," Yousafzai said on her website.
After receiving treatment for her injuries in a British hospital, Yousafzai dedicated herself to the cause of education for all. She said being shot had only strengthened her resolve.

"They can only shoot a body, they cannot shoot my dreams," Yousafzai said. "They shot me because they wanted to tell me that, 'we want to kill you and to stop you campaigning', but they did the biggest mistake: they injured me, and they told me through that attack, that even death is supporting me, even death does not want to kill me."
Yousafzai penned the bestselling book, "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up For Education And Was Shot By The Taliban," and launched The Malala Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on helping girls go to school and promoting their right of education. For her efforts, she has received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the European Union's annual human rights award. Previous winners include Nobel Peace Prize laureates Aung San Suu Kyi and Nelson Mandela.

Satyarthi, 60, is a children's rights activist who has dedicated his life to helping the millions of youths in India and around the world that have been forced into slavery.
A former electrical engineer, Satyarthi has participated in countless peaceful demonstrations and protests against the exploitation of children. He has mounted raids on factories where children were forced to work, and helped free and rehabilitate thousands. Satyarthi also established Rugmark (now known as Goodweave), a group that aims to "stop child labor in the carpet industry and to replicate its market-based approach in other sectors," and currently heads the Global March Against Child Labor, a conglomeration of 2,000 social-minded organizations and trade unions in 140 countries.
Satyarthi's contributions have received many honors, including the Aachener International Peace Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, the Wallenberg Medal and the Defenders of Democracy Award.
"This is an honor for all my fellow Indians, as well as an honor for all those children in the world whose voices were never heard before properly," Satyarthi told India's NDTV network.
"The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism," the Committee stated in a press release. "Many other individuals and institutions in the international community have also contributed. It has been calculated that there are 168 million child laborers around the world today. In 2000, the figure was 78 million higher. The world has come closer to the goal of eliminating child labor."
The two will split the Nobel award of $1.1 million.

QUEEN FOREVER - Trial

Queen have released a trailer for Queen Forever, the album containing Freddie Mercury’s final unheard works.
It includes three tracks featuring the late frontman’s vocals – There Must Be More To Life Than This, his duet with Michael Jackson; previously unfinished song Let Me In Your Heart Again; and a stripped-down ballad version of Love Kills, his collaboration with Giorgio Moroder.
Producer William Orbit, who worked on the Jackson track, says: “When I first played it in my studio I opened a trove of delights. Hearing Michael Jackson's vocals was stirring – so vivid, so cool, and poignant; it was like he was in the studio singing live. With Freddie's vocal solo on the mixing desk, my appreciation for his gift was taken to an even higher level.”
Queen Forever is released on November 10 and it's available for pre-order in standard single CD and deluxe 2CD formats. Brian May and Roger Taylor tour the UK with Adam Lambert in January.
