A little bit of promotion

I am not good in promoting myself. My former chief told me already so: Hans, you are good, but when you want others to see it you need to show it better.

I think that his well meant advice is a thing that will stay with me for a lifetime and that I will never be able to sell myself properly.  And that whilst I am living with a sales manager, who is very good in this kind of things.  Hmmm..  I am hopeless.

After the photowalk from past Saturday (what was an awesome one, the park was filled with golden trees, the light was perfect and so are the pictures), I was so excited about my photo's that I want the entire world to see them.
Now that is not even possible with the best promotion, but... I was so brave and did promote my photo site at facebook a bit.

The site, DreamsUnlimited, exists about 5 years and only did grow in the past year from over 100 until 223 today.  Past week it was 200, also in one week 10 percent more 'likes', I am excited, and I know pretty well how it comes. Not only by my pictures, but as well with telling the people about it, in groups, on other sites. And still, I am very polite in asking people to 'like'  the page.

But I am a tiny bit exited, to see that it works. My 'slogan'  is, if you like my photo's, why then not make it easy, and 'like'  my facebook photo site, so that you are informed all the time about what is happening?

Okay, that does mean that I need to update the site regurarily. It is a matter of getting used to it. And of course I use Facebook as a backup for my photography. It will not come so far that the photo's at facebook are more important then the ones at HaFri Photography. There is where all my work is collected.  But I am not sure how I want to promote that. If ever. :)

We’re one signature away

The Prime Minister of Peru has a bill on his desk that would turn one of the most precious corners of the Amazon into a National Park -- he just needs to sign it. Every hour he doesn’t sign it, this treasured piece of land is being destroyed. Join the urgent call to save the Sierra del Divisor:

SIGN NOW

Dear friends,

A beautiful, far-flung piece of the Amazonian rainforest is under threat — vast swathes of untouched land home to jaguars, cougars and a vast range of flora and fauna are at risk of being destroyed by illegal coca growers and loggers. But with a stroke of his pen, the Peruvian Prime Minister could turn it into a National Park and save it.
The bill to protect the forest is on his desk and PM Cateriano is considering signing it right now -- but every hour he doesn’t, this treasure is being destroyed. If he takes a stand against this illegal destruction, his leadership could inspire others to protect the planet and his example will echo down generations. But it’s up to us to make sure he knows that.Activists in Peru say if Cateriano knows the whole world is supporting him, it will tip him to take action. Environmentalists and indigenous groups have been lobbying for twenty years to get this area protected. Let’s give it a final Avaaz push. Click to sign the petition, and Avaaz will deliver it directly to the Prime Minister’s office:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sierra_del_divisor_loc/?bIiqNab&v=66505

Sierra del Divisor is a unique part of the Amazon. It’s home to many indigenous Peruvian communities, and one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. But time is running out. Illegal loggers, gold miners and coca growers are destroying it, and now there are rumours of road building and oil and gas operations that could threaten the area.
Some might say that making Sierra del Divisor a National Park will not be enough to stop illegal extraction. But National Park designation is like turning on a tap, and once you turn the handle, it gushes out manpower, financial resources, stricter regulations and inspections.
We're almost there: since 2006, there has been a joint effort of conservationists, indigenous communities, government officials and the private sector all pushing to make Sierra del Divisor a protected area. Now it is finally ready to go -- all it needs is one signature. Click to sign the petition -- let’s show Cateriano the whole world cares, and wants him to be a hero:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sierra_del_divisor_loc/?bIiqNab&v=66505

The Avaaz community has stood up time and again to protect our forests - last year tens of thousands of us donated to buy and protect an area where many of the world’s remaining orangutans live. Now let’s persuade Peru’s Prime Minister to be the leader the world is crying out for and save this majestic land.

With hope and determination,

Riccardo, Maria Paz, Oscar, Alice, Luis, Caro and the whole Avaaz team.

Starburst galaxy Messier 94

Starburst galaxy Messier 94

This image shows the galaxy Messier 94, which lies in the small northern constellation of the Hunting Dogs, about 16 million light-years away.
Within the bright ring around Messier 94 new stars are forming at a high rate and many young, bright stars are present within it – thanks to this, this feature is called a starburst ring.
The cause of this peculiarly shaped star-forming region is likely a pressure wave going outwards from the galactic centre, compressing the gas and dust in the outer region. The compression of material means the gas starts to collapse into denser clouds. Inside these dense clouds, gravity pulls the gas and dust together until temperature and pressure are high enough for stars to be born.

The last rose

The last rose

I saw you there

So strong between the less green
Your remarkable present touched me in between
Your beautiful colour
Clear, charming, a fragile buffer
The elements you now need to suffer

Still you flower your magic dose
Fragile, flowerful, the last rose
That what was
Had to be
What remains
Is magically

And I look forward to next year
When you will flower again
Be sure that I will be here

De laatste roos

Ik zag je staan
Zo fier, tussen het minderende groen
Opvallend gekleurd trof je me, toen
Jouw mooie kleur
Opvallend, maar toch bescheiden
Onder de elementen moet je leiden

Toch bloei je nog een poos
Je boeit me, als laatste roos
Dat wat was
Is voorbij
Jouw magie

Hubble’s planetary portrait captures changes in Jupiter’s Great Red Spot

Hubble’s planetary portrait captures changes in Jupiter’s Great Red Spot

13 October 2015
Scientists using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have produced new maps of Jupiter that show the continuing changes in its famous Great Red Spot. The images also reveal a rare wave structure in the planet’s atmosphere that has not been seen for decades. The new image is the first in a series of annual portraits of the Solar System’s outer planets, which will give us new glimpses of these remote worlds, and help scientists to study how they change over time.
In this new image of Jupiter a broad range of features has been captured, including winds, clouds and storms. The scientists behind the new images took pictures of Jupiter using Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 over a ten-hour period and have produced two maps of the entire planet from the observations. These maps make it possible to determine the speeds of Jupiter’s winds, to identify different phenomena in its atmosphere and to track changes in its most famous features.
The new images confirm that the huge storm, which has raged on Jupiter’s surface for at least three hundred years, continues to shrink, but that it may not go out without a fight. The storm, known as the Great Red Spot, is seen here swirling at the centre of the image of the planet. It has been decreasing in size at a noticeably faster rate from year to year for some time. But now, the rate of shrinkage seems to be slowing again, even though the spot is still about 240 kilometres smaller than it was in 2014.
The spot’s size is not the only change that has been captured by Hubble. At the centre of the spot, which is less intense in colour than it once was, an unusual wispy filament can be seen spanning almost the entire width of the vortex. This filamentary streamer rotates and twists throughout the ten-hour span of the Great Red Spot image sequence, distorted by winds that are blowing at 540 kilometres per hour.
There is another feature of interest in this new view of our giant neighbour. Just north of the planet’s equator, researchers have found a rare wave structure, of a type that has been spotted on the planet only once before, decades ago by the Voyager 2 mission, which was launched in 1977. In the Voyager 2 images the wave was barely visible and astronomers began to think its appearance was a fluke, as nothing like it has been seen since, until now.
The current wave was found in a region dotted with cyclones and anticyclones. Similar waves — called baroclinic waves — sometimes appear in the Earth’s atmosphere where cyclones are forming. The wave may originate in a clear layer beneath the clouds, only becoming visible when it propagates up into the cloud deck, according to the researchers.
The observations of Jupiter form part of the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) programme, which will allow Hubble to dedicate time each year to observing the outer planets. In addition to Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus have already been observed as part of the programme and maps of these planets will be placed in the public archive. Saturn will be added to the series later. The collection of maps that will be built up over time will help scientists not only to understand the atmospheres of giant planets in the Solar System, but also the atmospheres of our own planet and of the planets that are being discovered around other stars.

Notes

The findings are described in an Astrophysical Journal paper First results from the Hubble OPAL program: Jupiter in 2015, available online.

Seine Worte „CCleaner is … how do i put it mildy … Don’t … let’s just move on“ heißen übersetzt so viel wie: „Der CCleaner ist … wie sage ich das am besten … Nein … lassen Sie uns weitermachen“.

Chatting in Satty's style

Those of you who have a dog, you know how it works when you are on the go with it. There is always someone who says hello, who makes a short chat or asks questions.
Maybe those of you who have a camera know that feeling as well.  I have no dog, but the camera, and it happens often that I meet people who do notice that.

Lines like, o, what a nice camera (thank you!), are you reporter (no, else I had pictured you already 20 times), I am used to them and I seriously will need to make a 'business card', because it is so much more easy to give that, then to tell them the name of the website and email.

Who follows me a bit, knows that I am often in 'the park', at minimum 1 time a week for my 52 pictures (today is the day again), and when I walk that block, the chance is big that I meet one or more photographers. In the meanwhile we know each other a bit beter, we go photoshooting in the area together, it is a nice way to 'meet people'  who have the same intrests.

Not long ago I was having a chat with an elder man (hm, I have to notice that he might have been my age, LOL),  who was pointing at the fallen tree in the water, where I was looking at.

Do you like that?  He asked me.
Yes, I replied, it is wonderful, the birds and other animals have a great place there and that is beautiful as well to photograph

Hm, the man said. You seriously like this trash?  They (no idea who he meant with that)  should have cleaned it up here long ago.
Well, I said, I do not agree with that.  This tree did bring back a lot of the nature, in the park, it is a natural thing what more belongs there then the beercans and pizza boxes that I see. (and, just to get at the nerves of that man,  I did pick up a pizza box and put it in the waste bin).

Hm, he said, it is disgusting. Yes, I said, people should value the things better and take care that they clean up their waste, before pointing to others.
Oh, the man said, then you sure are one of them (.. whoever) that do not mind all those strangers in the park as well.
Well, I said, i assume you mean the refugees. I know a few of them and they are realy nice, did you know they use their mobile telephones to talk with me and others?

By the way, I never saw you before here in the park, for me you are more a stranger then those friendly people that are guests in our city.

The man did turn around and went away.  Maybe I  said something wrong?

Th birds, the fishes, and the nature, did look all a bit more happy, after this, or was that just my illusion?
