The influence of trends and festiivities from other countries is getting bigger. It is natural, globalisation works, integration as well, so we in the western world do not look surprised anymore with celebrations of other cultures and religions. What is a good thing, we can learn from that that, basically, the differences between religions and cultures are not as big as that certain groups want us to believe.
It is very intresting to know the backgrounds of certain things, like Halloween and Thanksgiving, it gives a view that goes further then just a celebration and a day of tric and turkey.
Other phenonemas are less easy to explain
Today it is in America Black Friday. The day after thanksgiving is long time taken by the commercial institutes, it is an extra day off for many, and that means that the people need to be entertained and the best thing to do such is to let them shop.
Black Friday is called black because of the traditional rush at the sales in the shops. It is of course a circle, more people do so, more sales, and so on.
So, there is a group of americans that is not spending Thanksgiving with being grateful and meeting beloved ones, but they take the sleeping bags and install themselves before the malls to be the first ones who are getting in.
Now you should say, that we, here, far away, in Europe, has not much to do with it, but... wrong of course. First of all you just have to look at your games or websites at the internet, everywhere all the sudden great sales are showing up. As if I all the sudden, today, need to buy something cheap?
Apart from that, more and more companies are introducing the black friday into our good old world, sales and all are coming up fast.
I was early in the big city this morning and we saw a group of people, standing waiting outside the shop to get open. A strange thing, still, in our cities, but we did put the proper connection to it (I think). Anyway, I went to the bakery, where was as well a queue. But.. that is because it is a good bakery, half of the city is buying their bread there.
When walking back, the shops were open and I thought, I peek into the shop that had that fantastic (do you feel the sarcasm here? If not then now, I hope!) row of people waiting in the cold, to see what did happen to them
I did one step in the (open) door of the shop and all the sudden I was rammed from behind by a guy who appearantly had slept too long (or too short?) and was afraid missing his sale. In a reflex I did put out my foot (go go gadget foot) and all the sudden the guy was flat in the shop. At that moment I was walking outside already, and bought myself a cup of coffee in the shop at the other side, among the audience that just did experience this performance.
The coffee was delicious. It is great when no one matters about what you just did :-)
