Soaring domes built with bamboo, the new "green steel"

Soaring domes built with bamboo, the new "green steel"

We may have seen the rise and fall of bamboo clothing, but we are currently witnessing a renaissance of bamboo building in architecture. From swooping bridgesto floating disaster-proof shelters, we've seen how bamboo exceeds expectations when it comes to strength, cost-effectiveness and beauty. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam-based firm Vo Trong Nghia Architects is one of these bamboo architecture pioneers, recently constructing a number of gorgeous projects that demonstrate the extensive capabilities of bamboo, which some have dubbed "vegetable steel."

Fusing traditional folk art and contemporary architecture, the firm has begun construction of eight 24-metre (78.7-foot) wide domes, all made with columns of woven bamboo stalks that have been secured into concrete foundations. Located on Diamond Island, an small artificial formation of land, the eight domes are intended as flexible community spaces for local residents, to use for conferences, parties and for a restaurant.

Traditionally used for baskets and furniture, in a recent interview with Dezeen, Nghia expressed his belief how bamboo, or what he calls the new "green steel," will supercede other materials in the coming years:
I think bamboo and laminated bamboo will replace other materials. I hope many architects realise the potential of the material and build with bamboo more and more.
Nghia has advocated the use of bamboo as a easily replaceable, inexpensive but strong cladding material, to be used in conjunction with concrete, as a way to solve Vietnam's housing crisis. The country's mostly warm climate means that bamboo is a feasible material to use in such a situation. According to the architect, once bamboo has been soaked in mud and smoked, it becomes as strong as timber.

Set to be completed in October of this year, this is another remarkable bamboo project that demonstrates the amazing capabilities of the material. See more incredible bamboo virtuosity from Vo Trong Nghia Architects.

Stap van de olifant af!

Beste H,
Alvast bedankt!
Hartelijke groet,

Pascal de Smit,

the miracle

When you look to the messages of the world, and we can do that so easily, television, internet, radio, apps, it looks like half of the world is in war and the other half  is starving from hunger.
It goes without saying that the major part of humans is in the role of victims, and the minority in the role of audience. We are part of that minority, watching the wars with the bag of crisps next to us, ready to zap to another channel or open another site when we have seen enough of the drama.

When you look back into history, you see that regurarily big wars are returning, there is always some strong power what tries to rule a big part of the world ... and in the end they all fail.
At the moment the religious wars are very prominent, even more prominent then the new 'cold war'  between the West and the Russian bear.
But, war is war, and where is war, there are victims, innocent victims.
The easiest way is to blame others for the situation.
The people in Gaza blame Israel for killing their people, easily forgetting that an extreme group, that they support, constantly threathens Israel to do the same. It is only a matter of time before they as well have the power to slaughter and no one will be surprised then that they will strike back.

How many years ago, John Lennon did write the words war is over, if you want it?
This simple words are exactly where it is about.
What would a war be, when no one is attending?

It is so easy to blame others, and ask for revenche, when you are the victim of something, of a war. But who is screaming the loudest for revenche?
What should you do, when your family is killed? Should you run and take revenge?  I think that most of us should sit down, quietly, being sad, moaning and not knowing what to do.  The victims in the war know as no other that violence back is not a solution.  Violence cannot take away your sadness, it is not satisfying the loss of who are killed.

A war has no winners.
The people who scream and encourage the violence, are the people who try to take advantage of it. The people that earn money with selling weapons (no matter to who). The politicians that are afraid to loose ther power, their face, their reputation.
The people in the street do not want to kill others. Intstitutions lke the army are a kind of legalized murderers, trained to kill. But I am sure that the soldiers who say, hey, I am bored, let's go to fight, are in a small minority.  Same is with the extremists, who kill others. When the public opinion, we,  sympathizes with them, and in that way allowing that they kill innocent people, then we, the 'public'  are to blame for making the wars possible.

And when you say that religion or poverty is one of the reasons for war, then I say that you are talking bullshit.
There is no religion that preaches for violence. There is in fact  no one in the world who wants it. Just a small extreme group. And we can blame no one but ourself, to give those powers the feed to slaugher our people.

Why are you so shocked when the bomb drops at your house, or when your family is involved?  You are the one who did not take action. You did allow your 'party'  to buy weapons, to provocate, to encourage violence against others.
You are the parrot, that talks what others say, and get rewarded with a peanut, so that you say it again, and so that others say it as well, so that the few that want it can say, see? THEY want it. YOU want it.

Why being a parrot?
Why not telling your own opinion?
And even better, why not show that you are not one of those that blindly talks what others say?
Show it!
There are better jobs then serving the army

It is easy to say hello to someone in the bus, who looks different. Is that person a threat of you, because of the other clothes, the other skin color?
Do you realy need to swear to someone that isnt able to talk in your language, and tell them to f.ck off to their own country?

Be better. Keep your eyes open. Be nice to others. You get what you give. Give a smile and you get a smile back, When another threathens you, dont try to convince him with power.  Or her.  Convince them with living together. Help that lady over the street, or with carrying her shoppingbag.  Or that frrom that old man.
Dont be scared when someone shows up being dressed unusual. Dont judge about people who look different then you.  We are all God's people. And it doesnt matter if you believe in God, Allah, or that something else is your religion.

We dont need violence do we?  So why feeding it?

Just do it. It doesnt hurt. Dont be the parrot. Be the human being, show your heart. It is worth to be seen!

The one thing we're all waiting for
is peace on earth, an end to war
It's a miracle we need, the miracle
The miracle we're all waiting for today

Israel-Palestine: This is how it ends

As a new round of violence kicks off in Israel-Palestine and more children are killed, it's time to take definitive non-violent action to end this nightmare. Our governments and companies have continued to aid, trade and invest in the violence, but we can help stop it if we call on key banks, pension funds and businesses to pull out their investments -- add your voice now:

As a new round of violence kicks off in Israel-Palestine and more children are killed, it's not enough just to call for another ceasefire. It’s time to take definitive non-violent action to end this decades long nightmare.

Our governments have failed -- while they have talked peace and passed UN resolutions, they and our companies have continued to aid, trade and invest in the violence. The only way to stop this hellish cycle of Israel confiscating Palestinian lands, daily collective punishment of innocent Palestinian families, Hamas firing rockets, and Israel bombing Gaza is to make the economic cost of this conflict too high to bear.

We know it works -- when EU countries issued guidelines not to fund the illegal Israeli settlements it caused an earthquake in the cabinet, and when citizens successfully persuaded a Dutch pension fund, PGGM, to withdraw, it created a political storm.

This may not feel like a direct way to stop the current killing, but history tells us that raising the financial cost of oppression can pave a path to peace. Click to call on 6 key banks, pension funds and businesses to pull out -- If we all take smart action now and turn up the heat, they could withdraw, the Israeli economy will take a hit, and we can turn the calculation of the extremists politically profiting from this hell upside down:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/gaza_this_is_how_it_ends_loc/?bIiqNab&v=42589

In the last five weeks three Israeli teenagers were murdered in the West Bank, a Palestinian boy was burnt alive, an American kid was brutally beaten up by Israeli police, and now over 40 Gazan kids have died in Israeli air strikes. This is not the “Middle East conflict”, it's becoming a war on children. And we are becoming numb to this global shame.

The media makes out like this is an intractable conflict between two equal warring parties, but it is not. Palestinian extremists' attacks on innocent civilians must be condemned and ended but the root of the conflict lies elsewhere -- in the dispossession of the Palestinian people. Israel currently occupies, colonises, bombs, raids, and controls the water, trade and the borders of a legally free nation that has been recognised by the United Nations. In Gaza, Israel has created the largest open-air prison in the world, and then blockaded it. Now as bombs fall, the families, literally have no way to get out.

These are war crimes and we wouldn't accept that anywhere else, why accept it in Palestine? Half a century ago Israel and its Arab neighbours went to war and Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza. Occupying territory after war happens all the time. But no military occupation should turn into a decades long tyranny which only fuels and benefits extremists who use terror to target the innocent. And who suffers? The majority of loving families on both sides that just want freedom and peace.

To many, particularly in Europe and North America, calling for companies to withdraw investments from Israel sounds completely biased. But it’s not -- this is the most potent non-violent strategy to end the ritual violence, ensure Israelis' security and achieve Palestinian freedom. Israel’s power and wealth dwarfs Palestine, and if it refuses to end its illegal occupation, the world must act to make the cost unbearable.

Dutch pension fund, ABP, invests in Israeli banks that help fund the colonisation of Palestine. Massive banks like Barclays invest in suppliers of Israeli arms and other occupation businesses. Computer giant Hewlett-Packard supplies sophisticated surveillance to control the movement of Palestinians. And Caterpillar provides bulldozers that are used to demolish Palestinian homes and farms. If we can create the biggest global call ever to get these companies to pull out, we will show clearly that the world will no longer be complicit in this bloodshed. The Palestinian people are calling on the world to support this path and progressive Israelis support it too. Let’s join them:

Our community has worked to bring peace, hope, and change to some of the world’s toughest conflicts, and often that means taking difficult positions to address the root cause. For years our community has looked for a political solution to this nightmare, but with this new round of horror unfolding in Gaza, the time has come to turn to sanctions and disinvestment to finally help end the horror for Israelis and Palestinians.

With hope and determination,
