Dalai Lama Dear Hans,

Today is His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 79th birthday, according to the Western calendar. On this auspicious occasion, I would like to offer my humble greetings of Tashi Delek to His Holiness and to share some personal thoughts on what he means to me and encourage you to reflect on what he means to you.

Although his humble self-description of being “a simple Buddhist monk” is technically accurate, His Holiness is so much more – a compassionate individual, beloved spiritual leader, patient teacher and inspirational peacemaker, among other honorifics that may come to your mind. Above all, his messages are always simple yet powerful.

For example, during remarks he made on his birthday last year, he said, “The best gift for me on my birthday is keeping your own mind and your own heart more compassionate, with a genuine sense of concern for others’ well being. With that motivation, if possible, serve others, including animals. If you do not have the opportunity of serving others, then at least restrain from harming them. Living a more compassionate life; that is the best present for my birthday.”

His Holiness’ message is that there is a path each of us can follow to make life better for ourselves as well as for all people on this earth. Your path may vary from mine, but our destination will be the same if we give ourselves over to our personal paths with courage and commitment.

As we celebrate His Holiness’ birthday today and rejoice in his kindness, we at the International Campaign for Tibet are determined to continue our work to alleviate the plight of the Tibetan people. We thank you for your support in this endeavor.
