Mam-flash Adventureland ad banned

The Advertising Standards Authority has kicked into touch an online ad for Disney flick Adventureland, which encouraged Yahoo! users to whip off a woman's shirt with a click of the mouse.

The ASA explains:

An internet ad for the cinema release of the film Adventureland showed the torso of a woman wearing a white T-shirt with the word "Adventureland" written on it. On-screen text at the top of the screen stated "From the director of SUPERBAD. In Cinemas 11th September", while text at the bottom of the ad stated "Lift my shirt to see more. Click and drag up with your mouse". If users followed the on-screen instructions, the woman removed her T-shirt revealing that she was naked underneath.

In fact, a black rectangle covered the offending mams, but the animation attracted one complaint. It suggested that "the ad was offensive because it encouraged users to lift the woman's shirt in a voyeuristic manner" and "the ad was inappropriately located on the Yahoo! news page where it could easily be seen by children".

Disney defended that it "believed that the ad was not offensive and that the image of the woman lifting her top should be viewed in the context of the film trailer and the medium in which it was made available to the public", adding that "ads featuring womens' breasts were fairly common".

The ad was, the studio continued, for a 15-rated film and "designed with the target audience of 16- to 34-year-old men in mind, and that its placement and exposure was planned accordingly on the Yahoo! webpage".

Yahoo! noted that its news page boasted a 95 per cent readership of people aged 18 or over, and therefore, with "such a high adult audience, it was unlikely that many children would have seen the ad".

The ASA, though, ruled the ad offside on two breaches of the CAP code: clause 5.1 (Decency) on the grounds that "because users were encouraged to take action to remove the woman's top in order to see her breasts, the ad was likely to cause serious offence to some users"; and clause 2.2 (Social responsibility) since "the site was of general interest and likely to appeal to a broad range of internet users and that the ad was not protected through age verification or targeting".

It accordingly ruled that the advert "should not appear again in its current form".

Flashes jubs, gets run over

A New Zealand teenager whose mates dared her to flash her chesticles at passing motorists brought traffic to a standstill when an appreciative driver ran her over, the Southland Times reports.

Cherelle May Dudfield, 18, stood in the middle of an Invercargill road with her assets exposed on 27 September. This turned out to be ill-advised, and despite her attempts to evade an oncoming vehicle, she "rolled over the bonnet, cracking the windscreen".

An uninjured Dudfield earned herself an appearance before Invercargill District Court on a disorderly behaviour rap, where she pleaded guilty to improper use of Bulgarian airbags.

Duty solicitor John Fraser suggested the driver involved could have been a little more careful, but conceded he may have been "distracted".

Judge David Holderness said Dudfield was lucky the consequences weren't more serious and slapped her with a NZ$275 fine.

Explanation: Monstrously bright, this fireball meteor lit up the Mojave Desert sky Monday morning, part of this year's impressive Geminid meteor shower. Seen toward the southwest over rock formations near Victorville, California, a more familiar celestial background was momentarily washed out by the meteor's flash. The background includes bright star Sirius at the left, and Aldebaran and the Pleaides star cluster at the right side of the image. The meteor itself blazes through the constellation Orion. Its greenish trail begins just left of a yellow-tinted Betelgeuse and points back to the shower's radiant in Gemini, just off the top of the frame. A rewarding catch for photographer Wally Pacholka, the spectacular image is one of over 1500 frames that he reports captured 48, mostly faint, Geminid meteors.

Being wise

Today is one of those days

One of those days that I wonder about people, their behavior, and so more
Probably I wonder in the same way, as that they think about me, I don't need to know that...

When someone asks me, how are you, I am prepared to hear their story
When I ask someone, how are you, I realy do love to hear what's up. And not just, I'm fine and how are you, ignoring their own things
In friendship it comes to an exchange, at an equal base, so if one realy cares, (s)he listens as much to what I have to say, as that I listen

People who know me a bit better, know that I value my freedom very much.
More than many, I appreciate to be left alone. Give me space, and I will turn to you, sooner or later.
Or when it is very late, just say hello, and I wake up again :)

Usually I return
when I am ready for it
Don't expect from me a greeting or word in guestbooks, a reply at an email as soon as I can

But rely on it, I do know where you are, and sooner or later, at the time he decided
I'll be there again

I don't think that I am wise
But it is indeed good to overlook some
So that the good, the bright, isn't too much hidden under the 'less important, what it's not about' fog.

I try to look bright, and I don't care about your mistakes. They make you who you are, your mistakes are just other ways to do things. Let me never stop to learn from them!

Security intensifies ahead of mass action to invade summit as 115 world leaders arrive for high-level talks

Friends of the Earth international, Avaaz, TckTckTck and other mainstream environment coalition groups were refused entry to the Copenhagen conference centre this morning, without being given any reason.

The Bella centre is the focal point for climate activists who are aiming to invade the summit today. Around the city, some 150 arrests have been made this morning as part of an intensification of security to keep the lid on actions in the conference centre as the first of 115 world leaders arrives in Copenhagen amid the major protests.

In a separate development, hundreds of non-government groups are to be individually banned from the centre or have their numbers slashed from tomorrow to make way for world leaders. Only 1,000 people from civil society will be allowed in to the conference hall tomorrow, and 90 on Friday.

This has provoked dismay with many delegates seeing it as a deliberate attempt to muzzle public voices and criticism of world leaders.

Andy Atkins, the director of Friends of the Earth UK, said: "We understand there has been unhappiness at some of the actions inside, but no formal explanation has been given. It is completely out of order. People are outraged at what is going on. Big mainstream organisations are being muzzled. This is madness."

Around 50 members of the group staged a sit-in at the inner lobby of the Bella centre. Friends of the Earth international is the largest international environmental federation in the world with groups in more than 70 countries.

TckTckTck is a global alliance of environment, development, church and human rights groups, Avaaz is a web-based pressure group which has organised thousands of climate meetings around the world. Together they claim to represent more than 10 million people.

"So many people are being excluded. The process is farcical. Civil society is being shut up, developing countries are being shut up, critical voices are being shut up," said Nicola Bullard, working with Focus on The Global South, a member of the climate justice movement.

"There's a lot of frustration among civil society that we are not moving quickly enough. There are obstructionist tactics. There are debates and arguments. As civil society we feel that they don't care," said Tom Goldtooth, a Bolivian with the Indigeous Environmental Network. "We feel they are negotiating for the sake of corporations instead of for the betterment of the people of the world."

In a later development, the UN offered Friends of the Earth International 12 places for the conference, but this was declined.

Magda Stoczkiewicz, director of Friends of the Earth Europe, said: "If Friends of the Earth is not allowed inside the UN negotiations we cannot play our crucial role in bringing the voices of citizens to the talks, especially the voices of those who are disadvantaged and already suffering most because of climate change. These draconian measures are completely unjustified. We said no to accepting 12 places."
